My Story
As a business and corporate lawyer, I’ve seen the profound impact that legal guidance can have on individuals and enterprises. But one unique experience shaped my approach to practicing law. Representing a client who had lost their spouse made me realize that being a lawyer is not just about legal expertise; it’s about being a compassionate guide during life’s difficulties. I am committed to listening, empathizing, and fiercely advocating for those facing adversity.
My love of sports and family provides solace beyond the courtroom. I admire teamwork, strategy, and resilience in athletes, which I bring to my legal practice. I also fuel my passion for learning by coaching young minds in mock trial teams, teaching legal studies at Des Moines Area Community College, and conducting an annual seminar on Business and the Law as part of the Small Business Association.
Insights & Experiences
My guiding principle is honesty. When providing advice to clients, I believe in presenting both positive and negative aspects. Being transparent helps to build trust, even when the news is not what they expected. It’s about giving them the information they need to make informed choices and empowering them to do so.
Background & Expertise
After graduating with my law degree from Drake University Law School in Des Moines, Iowa (J.D. with Honors: Order of the Coif, Drake Legal Research Editor, and Drake Law Review, 1977), I held the position of President at Anderson & Tully, P.C. until 2009 when I found my new partners with this firm. Prior to law school, I attended the University of Minnesota (B.A. magna cum laude, 1974) where I studied Political Science, Economics, and Business.
My underlying passion for building a strong community drives me to help small and medium-sized businesses thrive. Over my tenure, I’ve advocated for businesses across industries including food and beverage, construction, manufacturing, auto, agriculture, financial services and securities, and more. A well-rounded stable community is built on the strength of families and businesses. Advocating for their rights and interests is fundamental to building a better tomorrow.
